When a young English teacher read about a new writer receiving a Governor General’s Award for literature for her first book, he wrote her to ask if she’d drive two hours to his classroom in Nanaimo and be interviewed by his English class. ( Several of his students had expressed an interest in a writing career.) She graciously accepted the invitation. ( Years later Jack Hodgins himself received his own Governor Generals Award for his writing.)
